Why Prayer Is the Most Powerful Thing You Can Do Today

When Life Hurts, Here's Where to Run First

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

— 2 Corinthians 1:3–4

Hello, dear friend. There is a particular kind of ache that comes with being a single Christian woman in a hard season. Maybe it’s the grief of a relationship that didn’t work out. Maybe it’s watching friends move into life stages you’re still waiting for. Maybe it’s something entirely unrelated to your singleness — a loss, a health scare, a shattered dream. Whatever it is, I want to tell you something I have learned from my own valleys: God does not waste pain.

Paul opens 2 Corinthians with one of the most tender descriptions of God in all of Scripture: “the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.” Not some comfort. Not occasional comfort. All comfort. Every type of pain you could carry has a corresponding comfort that flows from the heart of God toward you.

God Meets You in the Trial, Not Just After It

One of the most important truths in this passage is the word “in.” He comforts us in all our tribulation — not after it resolves, not when we’ve learned the lesson, but right in the middle of it. You don’t have to wait to feel better before God shows up. He is already there, in the mess, in the tears, in the waiting room of your life.

This is why running to Scripture first — before the phone call to a friend, before the scroll through social media, before the spiral of overthinking — matters so much. His Word is where His comfort is most clearly delivered. When you open your Bible in pain, you are opening a direct line to the One who created you and who holds your story.

Your Pain Has a Purpose Beyond You

Perhaps the most remarkable part of this passage is its ending: God comforts us “that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble.” Your trial is not only about you. The comfort you receive in your hardest season is being stored up to pour out into someone else’s life. The woman who walks through grief becomes the one who knows how to sit with the grieving. The woman who turns trials into triumphs becomes a living testimony that hope is real.

So don’t despise the hard seasons, friend. Let God meet you in them. Let His Word be the first place you run. And trust that when you come out the other side, the comfort you received will become a gift to someone else who is still in the middle of their storm.

Reflection Prompt

Think of a current trial or area of pain in your life. In your journal, write out 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 and then write a prayer asking God to meet you specifically in that place. Then ask Him: “Who might You want me to comfort with the comfort I receive from You?” Let that question expand your perspective on your own suffering.
