Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, 'My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.' — Matthew 26:39
Hello, dear friend. I want to talk to you today about the prayer I avoided for years. The one I thought was too scary, too risky, too surrendering. The prayer Jesus prayed in the garden the night before everything fell apart — and the prayer that ultimately led to the greatest miracle in human history.

"Not my will, but Yours."
The Prayer That Terrifies and Transforms
We pray so many prayers asking God to give us what we want, to move things in the direction we've chosen, to confirm the plans we've already made. And there's nothing wrong with bringing your desires to God — He invites that. But the prayer that truly transforms is the one that places the pen back in God's hand.
"Not my will, but Yours" is terrifying because it requires trust. Real trust. The kind that doesn't insist on knowing the destination before it takes the first step. It's the prayer that says: God, I believe You are good even when I can't see it. I believe You know better than I do. I believe Your plan for my life is more beautiful than mine, even if it looks completely different right now.
Jesus prayed this prayer in Gethsemane not as a passive resignation but as an active, agonizing choice. He felt the weight of what was coming. He asked for another way. And then He surrendered — and because He surrendered, everything changed. Not just for Him, but for every one of us. Our faith resources can help you go deeper into what this kind of surrender-prayer looks like in the everyday moments of your life.
When you pray "not my will, but Yours" over a relationship, a career decision, a dream you've been holding tightly — you are not giving up. You are stepping into partnership with a God whose perspective is infinitely wider than yours. You're trading your anxiety for His peace.
Identify one area of your life where you've been tightly gripping your own plan. Write it down, then physically open your hands as a posture of surrender as you pray over it.
Pray this prayer slowly: "Lord, I trust that Your plan for me is good. I release [name the thing] into Your hands. Have Your way, not mine." Repeat it until you feel the grip loosen.
Ask God this question in prayer: "What would You have me do today?" Then sit quietly and listen before jumping into your agenda.
This prayer won't feel comfortable the first time — or the tenth time. But it is the doorway to a peace that cannot be manufactured by any other means. Explore more devotionals on the blog about walking in surrender and trust with God.
