The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
— Proverbs 18:15
Hello, dear friend. I remember the first time someone handed me a proper study Bible. I had been reading my little devotional Bible for years and thought I was doing just fine. But the moment I opened that study Bible and saw the cross-references, the maps, the concordance in the back — something shifted. Suddenly the Word felt wider and deeper than I had ever imagined. I didn't need more willpower to study Scripture. I just needed better tools.
Proverbs 18:15 tells us that the wise woman actively seeks knowledge. She doesn't wait for it to fall into her lap. She goes after it with intention. And in the same way, building a toolkit for your Bible study time is one of the most intentional things you can do for your faith. Whether you're brand new to studying Scripture or you've been at it for years, the right resources can open doors you didn't even know were there.

Start With a Good Study Bible
If you only invest in one resource, make it a quality study Bible. The ESV Study Bible, the NIV Life Application Bible, and the CSB (in)courage Women's Bible are all excellent choices for single Christian women who want depth with practical application. A good study Bible includes footnotes that explain cultural context, cross-references that connect themes across Scripture, and introductions to each book that help you understand what you're reading and why it was written.
Tools That Will Transform Your Study Time
Here are the resources I recommend building into your regular study routine. You don't need all of these at once — start with one or two and grow from there:
A Bible concordance or lexicon: Tools like Strong's Concordance allow you to look up the original Hebrew and Greek words behind your English translation. Understanding what a word actually meant in its original language can completely change how you read a passage.
Bible Gateway or YouVersion App: These free apps let you read multiple translations side by side, listen to audio Scripture, and save verses to your personal collection. They also offer reading plans to keep you consistent throughout the year.
A study journal: Writing down what God speaks to you through Scripture is one of the most powerful habits you can build. If you haven't started journaling your insights yet, there's no better time than now. A simple notebook works perfectly, or you can invest in a guided Bible study journal.
Bible commentaries: Authors like Matthew Henry, Warren Wiersbe, or more modern voices like Jennifer Rothschild offer rich insight into Scripture's meaning and application. Commentaries are especially helpful when you encounter a passage that confuses you.
Blue Letter Bible (blueletterbible.org): This free website is one of the most powerful study tools available. It combines concordances, commentaries, cross-references, and original language tools all in one place. I use it nearly every time I sit down to study.
Don't Forget the Power of Community
Tools are wonderful, but they work best when used alongside other women who are pursuing God with you. Studying Scripture in community multiplies the insight you gain on your own. When one woman notices something you missed, and you share what struck you, the Word comes alive in a way that solo study rarely produces. If you don't have a Bible study group yet, ask your church about small groups or consider starting one yourself.
And if you're just getting started building a study habit, don't miss our SOAP Bible studies as a framework for using these tools together. It gives you a simple structure that makes even a 15-minute study session feel rich and intentional.
You were made to seek God's wisdom with your whole heart. These tools simply help you do that more effectively.
Reflection Prompt
Take a few minutes to journal today. Which of the tools listed above do you already use, and which ones are new to you? Pick one new resource to try this week and write down what you hope to discover by using it. Ask God to open your eyes to His Word in fresh ways as you invest in your study toolkit.
