Be Honest — Has Your Bible Become a Decoration?

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
— Revelation 2:4
Hello, dear friend. I want to start today with a gentle, honest question: when did you last open your Bible and feel genuinely hungry for what was inside? Not out of obligation. Not to check a box. But because you actually wanted to hear from God? If that question made you pause, you're not alone — and you're in exactly the right place today.
Jesus spoke these sobering words to the church at Ephesus — a church that was doing all the right things outwardly. They were doctrinally sound, they were persevering, they were working hard for God. But something had quietly slipped away: the passion. The delight. The love that had once made them run to God rather than walk dutifully toward Him.

How We Drift Without Realizing It
Drifting from your first love rarely happens dramatically. It usually starts with one skipped quiet time that turns into a week. A prayer life that shrinks from conversation to quick requests. A Bible that moves from your nightstand to your shelf. Busyness, disappointment, or simply routine can quietly drain the color from what was once a vibrant relationship with God.
As a single woman, this drift can be especially sneaky. You might fill the emotional space that belongs to God with scrolling, socializing, or striving. None of those things are wrong in themselves — but when they crowd out your time with Him, the first love suffers. And deep down, you feel it.
The Road Back Is Simpler Than You Think
The good news is that Jesus doesn't just issue a warning in Revelation 2 — He gives a prescription. Remember. Repent. Return. That's it. You don't need a spiritual retreat or a complete overhaul. You just need to take one step back toward Him today.
Remember: Think back to when your faith felt most alive. What were you doing? What were you reading? Who were you spending time with? Let that memory stir a longing.
Repent: Honestly tell God where you've drifted. Not with shame — with honesty. He already knows and He's not disappointed. He's waiting.
Return: Open your Bible today — not with a plan to read a certain amount, but just to be with Him. Let the first step be small. He'll meet you there.
Friend, your first love is still waiting for you. And when you return, you'll find — just like the prodigal's father — that He was watching for you all along. Let the joy of His presence draw you back today, and let the living power of His Word reignite what has grown cold.
Reflection Prompt
In your journal today, write an honest letter to God about where you are with Him right now. Don't dress it up. Tell Him the truth. Then write Revelation 2:4 and beside it write three specific things you will do this week to return to your first love.
