Why Writing It Down Makes God's Word Stick

And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
— Habakkuk 2:2
Hello, dear friend. Can I ask you something? When God speaks to your heart during your quiet time, what do you do with it? Do you sit with it for a moment, nod your head, and then get on with your day? I used to do that. And more often than not, by noon the insight was gone — washed away by the noise of everyday life. It wasn't until I started keeping a journal that I realized just how much I had been letting slip through my fingers.
God told Habakkuk to write the vision down — not for his own sake alone, but so that others could read it and run with it. There's divine intentionality in the act of writing. When we write down what God reveals to us, we honor it. We hold it. And we make it available to revisit when life gets hard and we need a reminder of what God said.

What Journaling Does That Reading Alone Cannot
When you write, you slow down. You process. You pray on paper. Journaling forces you to take a thought and turn it into language, and that translation from impression to words is where so much spiritual growth happens. It's where you notice patterns — the same verse finding you in different seasons, the same fear God keeps addressing, the same promise He keeps reminding you of.
As a single woman, your journal also becomes a record of God's faithfulness. On the days when you feel forgotten or overlooked, you can flip back and read the ways He showed up. That record is powerful. It builds faith. It silences doubt. It reminds you that the God who spoke then is still speaking now.
Simple Ways to Start Journaling Scripture Today
Write out the verse: Copy the day's key Scripture by hand. The act of writing it yourself helps it sink in far deeper than just reading it.
Record what you heard: After reading, write one sentence beginning with 'God, I feel like You are saying to me today...' Don't overthink it. Just write.
Pray it back in writing: Turn your insight into a written prayer. Tell God what you're holding onto, what you're releasing, and what you're trusting Him with.
You don't need a fancy journal or beautiful handwriting. A simple notebook and a willing heart are all it takes. What matters is that you show up, pen in hand, ready to write what God is writing on your heart.
Reflection Prompt
Start your journal entry today with this: 'Lord, what do You want me to remember from this season?' Write whatever comes to mind. You may be surprised at what He has already been whispering that you haven't paused long enough to capture.
