Why Skipping Your Bible Time Feels Just Like Skipping a Meal

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
— Matthew 4:4
Hello, dear friend. Have you ever skipped breakfast and then wondered why you felt foggy, irritable, and low on energy by mid-morning? I have — more times than I’d like to admit. And I’ve noticed the exact same thing happens in my spiritual life when I skip time in God’s Word. I become emotionally scattered, anxious, and quick to react from a place of fear rather than faith.
When Jesus was being tempted in the wilderness after fasting for forty days, He reached for something more sustaining than physical bread — the Word of God. He quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, reminding us that our deepest hunger is not physical. It is spiritual. And only God’s Word can truly satisfy it.

Your Soul Has an Appetite
Just as your body has physical hunger, your soul has a spiritual hunger. That restlessness in the evening. That low-grade anxiety that never quite goes away. That sense that something is missing even when life looks fine on the outside. Often, what your soul is craving is the Word.
Making Scripture Your Daily Bread
Start small: Even five minutes of Scripture daily is better than an hour once a week. Consistency matters more than quantity.
Pair it with a habit you already have: Read your Bible with your morning coffee, during your lunch break, or before bed.
Keep your Bible visible: What’s in your line of sight gets your attention. Put your Bible somewhere you’ll see it every day.
Reflection Prompt
Journal about what you typically feed yourself emotionally and spiritually when you’re feeling empty. Ask God to help you reach for His Word first in those moments. What would your days look like if the Bible was your first nourishment, not your last resort?
