“For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” – Psalm 84:11

How often do you feel like you’re waiting for the next good thing—the relationship, the promotion, the ministry opportunity—before you can truly feel whole or blessed? This beautiful scripture reminds us that the source of all "good things" is already surrounding and protecting us. The Lord God is a sun and shield. A sun gives light, warmth, and life; a shield provides protection and security. You aren’t waiting on a person or a circumstance to complete you; you are already fully covered by the one who grants grace and glory.
The promise, "no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly," isn't a transactional guarantee for earthly possessions. It's an assurance of His perfect, sovereign provision. For the single Christian woman, this means that the season you are in right now is not a pause before your real life begins. God is actively giving you exactly what you need for this moment—be it strength to stand firm, peace amid loneliness, or opportunities to serve.
Imagine you've been praying for a life partner, and a close friend gets engaged, bringing on a wave of comparison and discouragement. Instead of feeling like God has withheld a "good thing" from you, pause and ask: What goodness is He actively giving me in my singleness today? Maybe it's the freedom to pursue further education, the extra time to volunteer, or the quiet space to grow deeper in prayer. Your upright walk is about trusting His perfect timing and acknowledging the good gifts He has given you, not just the ones you want.
Reflection Prompts
What "good thing" am I currently convinced I'm missing, and how can I intentionally praise God for the "sun and shield" He already is in my life today?
Read Philippians 4:19 and James 1:17. How do these verses confirm that God’s standard of "good things" is ultimately about meeting your needs and perfecting His gifts in you, rather than fulfilling your worldly desires?
The greatest gift we receive daily is His presence, which is the ultimate "good thing" that will never be taken away.
