"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
Each year, as the New Year starts, many of us make resolutions that reflect our desires for impact, connection, and growth. I remember a New Year’s Day several years ago, when a friend called me with an idea that changed my perspective. She suggested that instead of focusing on ourselves - our own waiting, our aspirations for love - why not commit to being a light in our community? Her words felt like a spark in my heart, illuminating a path of service and connection.

Becoming a Beacon
This commitment to service shifted my focus from what I was lacking to what I could give. We began volunteering at a local outreach program and started a book club for single women in our area. Slowly, I saw the glow of community building our relationships, and even friendships blossomed between us. I learned that while waiting for God’s timing in my personal life, I could actively contribute to the lives of others. By becoming the light, I found that the light inside of me seemed to shine brighter as well.
Spiritual Application
Matthew 5:16 is a gentle reminder that we are not called to simply exist in the shadows of our circumstances. Every act of kindness and every moment of service reflects God’s love and grace, showcasing His goodness to the world around us.
Here are some practical ways to commit to being a light in your community this year:
Volunteer: Find local charities or church programs where you can offer your time.
Be Intentional: Reach out to friends or acquaintances, invite them for coffee, or start a small group.
Support Local Businesses: Choose to uplift the places and people in your area by promoting their work through your social media.
Pray: Consistently pray for your community and ask God to show you how to be a blessing to others.
When we are proactive in lifting others up, we naturally cultivate an atmosphere where community thrives. Remember, it’s not about perfection, but rather about presence. Your willingness to step out and shine can encourage others to do the same!
Reflection
Take a moment today to think about your community and your role in it. What small actions can you take to share your light in your workplace, neighborhood, or church this year?
