"My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." 1 John 3:18
Lately, I’ve been reminded of the profound impact of love expressed through our actions during a simple experience in my suburban neighborhood. One breezy Saturday afternoon, I found myself head down, lost in the many thoughts swirling in my mind while I was at a local coffee shop. As I stirred my chai latte, I couldn’t help but notice a young mother struggling to manage her two small children. One child was fussing while the other was desperately trying to escape the confines of the high chair.

In that moment, I had a choice to make: I could stay huddled in my little bubble with my distractions, or I could choose to step into action. So, I put my drink down, approached her, and asked if she needed any help. The mom's sigh of relief was palpable. With a few minutes of my time, I was able to hold her wiggly toddler while she gathered her things and calmed her fussing baby. That day, love was not just an emotion; it was an act of service that brought light into a challenging moment for another.
Love is More Than Words
Just like my experience, the Bible calls us to express our love through actions. The verse from 1 John reminds us that love should not merely reside in our words but should translate into deeds that show true compassion and kindness.
As single Christian women, we often find ourselves in a waiting period—not just in our romantic aspirations, but in many areas of our lives. It can be easy to focus on what we lack, but we also have abundant opportunities to express love in our everyday activities. Here are some practical ways to do this:
Volunteer: Share your time and talents with those in your community.
Reach Out: Send a text or call someone who might be feeling lonely or down.
Be Present: Engage with family and friends, offering your support when they need it.
Encourage: Write a note of encouragement for a friend going through a tough time.
Living Love Daily
Each small act of love brings God’s light into the world around us. It’s easy to get caught up in feeling lonely or frustrated during our singleness, but focusing on loving others can cultivate joy and fulfillment in our lives. Love in action can also lead to unexpected blessings, as you never know how your small efforts can bring hope to someone else.
As you go about your day, ask yourself how you can show love through your words and actions. Find moments when you can choose to act—after all, love is a verb, not just a noun.
In closing, remember that while you wait, you have the remarkable ability to change lives for the better. Let your journey of love—through action—be a testimony of your faith and a blessing to those around you.
Reflection Prompt: What are some ways you can show love in action this week? Take a moment to journal your thoughts and plans.
