How to Know When God Is Actually Speaking to You
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
— John 10:27
Hello, dear friend. One of the questions I hear most from single Christian women is this: "How do I know if what I'm sensing is really God speaking, or just my own hopes and desires talking?" It's a sincere and important question — and Jesus gives us the most reassuring answer imaginable. He says: My sheep hear My voice.
Notice He doesn't say "My sheep might hear My voice" or "My sheep hear My voice sometimes." It's a statement of identity. If you belong to Jesus, you are capable of hearing Him. The question isn't whether He speaks — it's whether you've learned to recognize the sound.

How God Speaks Through His Word
The primary and most reliable way God speaks to us is through Scripture. Everything else — impressions, circumstances, wise counsel — must be tested against the plumb line of His Word. Here are some signs that what you're sensing as you read may genuinely be God speaking:
It aligns with Scripture: God will never contradict His own Word. If what you sense lines up with the principles and character of God revealed in the Bible, that's a strong confirmation.
It brings peace, not anxiety: God's voice tends to bring a settled sense of peace, even when the message challenges you. It convicts without condemning. It directs without manipulating.
It persists over time: A word from God doesn't tend to fade the next day. If the same impression or Scripture keeps returning to your heart over days or weeks, pay attention.
It is confirmed by community: God often uses other believers to confirm what He is saying to you privately. This is one of the great values of studying in community with other women who are also tuned into the Spirit.
The more time you spend in God's Word with a prayerful heart, the more familiar His voice becomes. It's like any relationship — the more you listen, the easier it becomes to recognize. And as you discover peace through His Word, you'll find that following Him becomes less about figuring out direction and more about simply staying close.
Reflection Prompt
Think about a time when you felt God clearly speaking to you. What were the circumstances? What made it feel distinct from your own thoughts? Journal about that experience and ask God to sharpen your spiritual hearing as you continue through this month in His Word.
