Finding Faith in Waiting: Lessons from Martha

Updated: Dec 26, 2025

As single women navigating the complexities of life and love, waiting can sometimes feel like an endless journey. In John 11:27, Martha exemplifies profound faith in a time of sorrow and uncertainty. She responds to Jesus, saying, "Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world." Martha's unwavering belief in Christ serves as a beautiful reminder for us as we await our own promises.

Understanding Martha's Journey

Martha's story, particularly in John 11, is layered with emotions—grief, hope, and ultimately, faith. When her brother Lazarus passed away, Martha was troubled.

Yet, her declaration of belief in Jesus despite her circumstances teaches us valuable lessons on how to thrive in our situations.

  • Martha's faith was personal. She didn't just believe in who Jesus was; she experienced it intimately. Are we nurturing a personal relationship with Christ as we wait?

  • Her faith acknowledged Jesus' power. Martha recognized that Jesus was not only the one who would come but also the one who could act in her current situation. Do we trust in His power in our waiting?

  • She was honest in her emotions. Martha openly expressed her pain and disappointment yet still believed. How can we be honest with ourselves and God during our waiting seasons?

Applying Martha's Principles to Our Lives

As we reflect on Martha's faith, let’s incorporate these principles into our daily lives:

  1. Cultivate Personal Faith: Take time daily to connect with God through prayer and scripture. This deepens your understanding and relationship with Him.

  2. Acknowledge God's Timing: Remind yourself that God's timing is perfect. Your wait has purpose and, like Martha, trust that He can make a way in your situation.

  3. Express Your Feelings: Share your struggles with God. He invites your honesty and will walk with you through your emotions.

  4. Surround Yourself with Support: Engage with a community of believers who can support you and encourage your faith journey.

Reflection: Finding Contentment in Waiting

In the moments we feel lost or unsure, let's remember Martha and her declaration of faith. She teaches us that while we wait, we can still hold onto hope and trust in God's perfect plan. Waiting is not a passive state; it's an opportunity to grow in faith and character.

As single Christian women, we have the unique chance to explore our identities in Christ, embrace our status, and find joy in our current circumstances. Let Martha's faith inspire you to confidently declare, "I believe!" no matter where you find yourself. Your waiting is not in vain.

So, let's hold onto our belief that not only is He coming, but that He is with us here and now, guiding us through every step of this journey.
