Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
— Psalm 119:105
Hello, dear friend. Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, staring at two paths with no idea which one to take? Maybe it’s a career decision, a move to a new city, a relationship you’re not sure about. I remember a season in my life when I felt completely paralyzed by the unknown. I kept waiting for a neon sign from God, a clear unmistakable direction. And while the big dramatic sign never came, something quieter and truer did — His Word began to light my next step.
Notice what the psalmist says in Psalm 119:105. He doesn’t say the Word is a floodlight that illuminates the entire road at once. He says it’s a lamp — and specifically, a lamp to his feet. Lamps in ancient times only lit a small circle around the person holding them. Enough to see the very next step. That is exactly how God often guides us.

You Don’t Need the Whole Map
One of the most freeing truths I’ve learned as a single woman walking with God is that He rarely shows us the full picture all at once. And that’s not a flaw in His guidance — it’s an invitation to trust. When we only need to see the next step, we stay close to Him. We stay dependent. We stay in relationship.
Scripture gives us the principles, the wisdom, and the character of God that help us discern which step is right. It may not name your specific job title or your future husband’s name. But it will shape your heart and mind so that when you face a decision, you are equipped to choose what honors God.
Practical Ways to Let Scripture Light Your Way
When you’re facing a decision, search the Word: Look for verses related to wisdom, trust, and the specific area you’re navigating. Ask God to highlight what you need to see.
Don’t wait for the full picture: If God has shown you one clear step, take it. The next light often appears as you move.
Write down what God reveals: Keep a running list of the ways Scripture has spoken into your specific situations. It builds faith for the next uncertain season.
Reflection Prompt
What area of your life feels dark or uncertain right now? Write it down and then spend time searching God’s Word specifically for that need. Ask Him: ‘What is the next step You are showing me?’ Trust that His lamp is enough.
